KANCHANABURI

River Kwai - Kanchanaburi is Thailand's fourth largest province and borders Burma to the west of Bangkok. It is the site of the world famous Bridge Over the River Kwai, immortalised in books and movies, and is noted for rugged natural beauty where mountains and river valleys have inspired development of golf courses. And dam reservoirs provide further scenic beauty with waterfalls, caves, national parks and tranquil riverine settings.

Visit Kanchanaburi Year

Death Railway, a legacy of World War II, was immortalised in the Hollywood blockbuster “Bridge on River Kwai”. Blessed with breathtaking natural scenery, rivers and waterfalls, Kanchanaburi, bordering Myanmar and laced heavily with World War II history, has designated 2006 "Visit Kanchanaburi Year" to resurrect its tourism industry.

Several private tourism-related organisations in Kanchanaburi Province have joined hands with the Tourism Authority of Thailand to plan tourist activities for next year for which state funding will also be sought. A spate of media and marketing promotions will be carried out locally and overseas to attract visitors.

The "Visit Kanchanaburi Year" tourism campaign is a determined attempt by the province to regain its rightful place among the tourist destinations of Thailand, said a local tour operator manager.

"Kanchanaburi used to consistently rank in the top-five of the most visited destinations in the Kingdom, but it has slipped down in the last few years. We think it's time we make a comeback".

They will seek to improve upons its current reputation _ a destination for budget travellers _ by highlighting its historical and ecotourism potential to attract more upscale travellers for a bigger slice of the tourist revenue.
